This Is How Healing Can Make You A Powerful Person
Believe it or not — we all need to heal from trauma. No one has a perfect life and everyone is fighting a battle of some sort whether they know it or not. This can be from childhood trauma all the way to relationship trauma.

I learned throughout my mental health journey that my childhood had a massive effect on my mental wellbeing today. I was mentally and emotionally abused throughout my whole childhood in school and at home. The constant abuse destroyed my self-esteem and self-worth. By the time I was 17 years old, I didn’t want to live anymore because I was programmed to think that I wasn’t good enough for anything. I am glad that I never gave up and moved forward with my life. There are many steps that need to be taken in the process of healing and I am here to share them with you…
The Healing Process
YOU NEED TO WANT IT
Healing from trauma is more complex than what people think. There is a mindset that you have to have first before anything. You have to WANT to heal. So many people are unaware of what they can accomplish when they WANT something. If you want it enough then you will get it — that is half the battle.
RELAPSES ARE A THING
Hate to break it to you — your trauma is going to creep back up on you if you slack on your healing habits.
For example, one of the battles that I face is self-sabotage. My self-sabotage behavior stems from my lack of self-worth as a child. Stress is the biggest trigger so when I get stressed out, I revert back to my toxic behaviors.
Now that you learned what to expect, how can you heal you may ask? I understand everyone’s journey is different, but the best I can do is share what I do. One big thing that I did to heal was…. wait for it…
MOVE OUT OF MY HOMETOWN.
The best way to start healing is to remove yourself from an environment that broke you.
Being exposed to a new environment was first frightening, but so worth it. It truly was the best decision of my life. It gave me the opportunity to grow and build a life that people in my hometown didn’t understand. The next thing that I do is…
TALK ABOUT IT
This is crucial in the process of healing. Once you have the courage to express yourself and talk about your struggles, you feel a weight lifted off your shoulder. Years ago when I was growing up, it was frowned upon to talk about your mental health struggles. You were seen as someone who was attention speaking and man thinking about it now, that is so damaging. Unfortunately, there are still people out there that are like that, but I am glad that mental health is starting to be talked about more on social media and the media overall.
IDENTIFY YOUR TRIGGERS
Self-awareness is really important with healing. If you don’t know why you act a certain way then how can you heal from it? Some of my triggers are lack of sleep and taking back-to-back calls at work. I suffer from bipolar disorder and it is proven that symptoms flare up when a person is lacking proper sleep. I always try my best to sleep 7–8 hours a day to make sure my brain is functioning properly otherwise I experience manic and depressive symptoms.
I avoid taking back-to-back calls at work because I get mentally exhausted easily. This is something I have learned recently. Because of my illness, I don’t have the same level of mental energy as some people so I decided to take time in between to alleviate that stress and avoid relapsing.

Some takeaways…
Once you take a step back and realize that you need to heal from your trauma, everything in your life will seem a lot easier.
Mental health recovery will be LIFELONG and the reason I say that is that you will still, unfortunately, experience new trauma throughout your life, but I truly believe healing from childhood trauma is the hardest because of brain development and lack of life experience. Once you learn how to help yourself then you are in a position where you can spread your wisdom to other people and that is what makes you powerful.
